I wasn’t going to post anything 9/11-related today, but as I was flipping through the June issue of Juxtapoz, I came across this eerily beautiful photograph by Matt Weber.
I had just turned 21 years old the month before and was still living in New Mexico. I woke up for work a little earlier than usual to a quiet apartment, as my girlfriend at the time had already left to her job for the day. I picked up my cell phone to parse through messages and missed calls from the night before only to find that an unusual amount of them were recent and belonged to my mother.
I called her and she very hastily urged me to turn the TV on and watch the news. We both sat silently on the phone for about five minutes, like we were watching the trailer footage for an upcoming movie that was soon to be released in theaters. The silence was finally broken by letting her know that I love her and that I had to begin getting ready for work.
The rest of my day was spent in a complete daze as I drove around town delivering pizzas, attempting to process what I had seen.
I still haven’t forgotten.
